Crafted, wrapped, and attracted: Love letter packaging that captured the hearts of land of the Rising Sun. Case Goodio.

The Japanese market is renowned for its uniqueness - a one-of-a-kind in the world, and Japanese consumers are known for demanding and having some of the highest product quality standards in the world. Therefore, the localization process of a brand or products has been the key feature in dictating whether the product will succeed in attracting Japanese consumers. The purpose of the research was to study the packaging as a part of product adaptation in Japanese consumer market. The objective of this study was to generate information for companies, using the perspective of the Japanese consumer market, so that they can understand Japan’s cultural requirements and consumer market expectations regarding product packaging design in the context of product adaptation. The Japanese cultural context was raised in the study for special consideration. The study also utilized a case company, a Finnish raw chocolate manufacturer, whose product packaging has aroused interest in the Japanese consumer market The qualitative data of the research was carried out mainly by qualitative methods. Empirical data were collected in two ways. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted with three expert interviewees, all of whom are connected to Goodio and the Japanese consumer market. Second, structural consumer interviews were conducted with thirty interviewees to map the consumer market perspective of the study. Based on the findings, product packaging played a pivotal role in consumer’s purchase decision. Packaging was expected to be attractive, high-quality and go hand-in-hand with the price. Product packaging was expected to contain elements such as use of colour codes, imagery, high-quality material, and functionality. Furthermore, adaptation tools in product adaptation were identified. In addition, the study provided significant new insights into cultural characteristics of the Japanese consumer market. The results of the study can be applied more extensively to different product groups that are interested in the Japanese consumer market. In addition to the practical benefits of the research will provide completely new information on the expectations of the Japanese consumer market for product packaging and product adaptation, as well as to present potential topics for further research.Japanin kuluttajamarkkinat ovat tunnettuja ainutlaatuisuudestaan, jossa tuotteiden laatustandardit ovat korkeimpia maailmassa. Lokalisointi sekä tuoteadaptaatio ovat nousseet avainasemaan, pohdittaessa, onnistuuko tuote houkuttelemaan japanilaisia kuluttajia puoleensa. Japanilaisten kuluttajien suuren maksukyvyn, sekä tuotteiden massiivisen tarjonnan vuoksi, tuotepakkauksesta on tullut merkittävä markkinointiviestinnän väline kuluttajan ostopäätöksessä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli analysoida tuotepakkausta osana tuoteadaptaatiota Japanin kuluttajamarkkinoilla. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus jaettiin kolmeen osaongelmaan: mitkä ovat Japanin kuluttajamarkkinoiden kulttuuriset ominaisuudet, mitkä ovat Japanin markkinoiden kulttuuriset vaatimukset tuoteadaptaatiolle sekä millaisia odotuksia japanilaisilla kuluttajilla on tuotepakkauksen elementeille. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin tutkimustapauksena suomalaista raakasuklaayritys Goodiota, jonka pakkaus on kerännyt kehuja Japanin kuluttajamarkkinoilla. Ilmiötä lähestyttiin ensin aikaisemman tieteellisen kirjallisuuden ja tutkimuksen avulla. Teoriakatsauksessa perehdyttiin Japanin kulttuurikontekstiin, tuoteadaptaation kilpailuvälineisiin, japanilaisten kuluttajakäyttäytymiseen ja tuotepakkauksen elementteihin. Tämän jälkeen tehtiin laadullinen tutkimus, jossa tapausyrityksenä toimi Goodio ja tämän Japanin markkinat. Aineisto kerättiin haastatteluin: kolme puolistrukturoitua asiantuntijahaastattelua sekä kolmekymmentä strukturoitua kuluttajahaastattelua 25–40-vuotiaiden japanilaisten parissa. Tutkimuksen mukaan tuotepakkaus on erittäin tärkeä osa kuluttajan ostopäätöstä. Pakkauksen oletetaan olevan korkealaatuinen ja viehättävä, sekä sen oletetaan ’kävelevän käsi kädessä’ tuotteen hinnan kanssa. Tuotepakkauksessa oletetaan olevan myös japanilaisille tärkeitä elementtejä, kuten värien ja kuvien asianmukainen käyttö, korkealaatuinen materiaali ja toiminnallisuus. Lisäksi tässä tutkimuksessa määriteltiin kulttuuristen vaatimusten ohella kilpailukykyiset työkalut. Näiden lisäksi tutkimus tarjosi merkittävää uutta tietoa kuluttajamarkkinoiden kulttuurisista ominaisuuksista. Tämä tutkimus luo uutta tutkimustietoa tulevaisuuden käyttötarkoituksia varten. Jos ulkomaalainen yritys osaa käyttää näitä kulttuurisidonnaisia pakkauselementtejä oikein tuotepakkauksessaan, tämän katsotaan olevan hyödyksi tuoteadaptaatiossa Japanin kuluttajamarkkinoilla

Common Inflammation-Related Candidate Gene Variants and Acute Kidney Injury in 2647 Critically Ill Finnish Patients

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a syndrome with high incidence among the critically ill. Because the clinical variables and currently used biomarkers have failed to predict the individual susceptibility to AKI, candidate gene variants for the trait have been studied. Studies about genetic predisposition to AKI have been mainly underpowered and of moderate quality. We report the association study of 27 genetic variants in a cohort of Finnish critically ill patients, focusing on the replication of associations detected with variants in genes related to inflammation, cell survival, or circulation. In this prospective, observational Finnish Acute Kidney Injury (FINNAKI) study, 2647 patients without chronic kidney disease were genotyped. We defined AKI according to Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. We compared severe AKI (Stages 2 and 3, n = 625) to controls (Stage 0, n = 1582). For genotyping we used iPLEX(TM) Assay (Agena Bioscience). We performed the association analyses with PLINK software, using an additive genetic model in logistic regression. Despite the numerous, although contradictory, studies about association between polymorphisms rs1800629 in TNFA and rs1800896 in IL10 and AKI, we found no association (odds ratios 1.06 (95% CI 0.89-1.28, p = 0.51) and 0.92 (95% CI 0.80-1.05, p = 0.20), respectively). Adjusting for confounders did not change the results. To conclude, we could not confirm the associations reported in previous studies in a cohort of critically ill patients.Peer reviewe

Heme oxygenase-1 repeat polymorphism in septic acute kidney injury

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a syndrome that frequently affects the critically ill. Recently, an increased number of dinucleotide repeats in the HMOX1 gene were reported to associate with development of AKI in cardiac surgery. We aimed to test the replicability of this finding in a Finnish cohort of critically ill septic patients. This multicenter study was part of the national FINNAKI study. We genotyped 300 patients with severe AKI (KDIGO 2 or 3) and 353 controls without AKI (KDIGO 0) for the guanine-thymine (GTn) repeat in the promoter region of the HMOX1 gene. The allele calling was based on the number of repeats, the cut off being 27 repeats in the S-L (short to long) classification, and 27 and 34 repeats for the S-M-L2 (short to medium to very long) classification. The plasma concentrations of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) enzyme were measured on admission. The allele distribution in our patients was similar to that published previously, with peaks at 23 and 30 repeats. The S-allele increases AKI risk. An adjusted OR was 1.30 for each S-allele in an additive genetic model (95% CI 1.01-1.66; p = 0.041). Alleles with a repeat number greater than 34 were significantly associated with lower HO-1 concentration (p<0.001). Saattohoitopotilaan suun terveysosaamista sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoille osana Studental työskentelyä

Yleisiä suussa ilmeneviä ongelmia saattohoitopotilailla ovat erilaiset suussa ja limakalvoilla ilmenevät infektiot kuten suun sieni- ja herpesinfektio, suun ja limakalvojen kuivuminen, limakalvojen arkuus, suun kipu, hampaiden reikiintyminen, ientulehdus ja parodontiitti. Myös haavaumat suun limakalvolla sekä ongelmat proteeseissa ovat yleisiä. Nämä aiheuttavat kipua suussa, jota sairaanhoitajien tulee osata lievittää. Sairaanhoitajien on hyvä myös osata kliinisesti tutkia saattohoitopotilaan suun kunto. Lisäksi suun hoito ja suuhygieniasta huolehtiminen kuuluvat olennaisena osana saattohoitopotilaan perushoitoon. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli laatia case tehtäviä sisältävä PowerPoint esitys saattohoitopotilaiden suun terveydessä ilmenevistä ongelmista sekä niiden hoidosta. Tavoitteena oli luoda PowerPoint esitys case tehtävineen, joka edistää sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden suun terveysosaamista saattohoitopotilaan hoidossa. Suun terveysosaamisella tarkoitetaan tässä työssä suussa ilmenevien ongelmien tunnistamisen sekä suun hoitoon liittyvän tiedon ja taidon hallintaa. Toiminnallisen opinnäytetyön tuloksena syntyi case tehtäviä sisältävä PowerPoint esitys saattohoitopotilaiden suun terveyden ongelmista ja niiden hoidosta, joka palvelee sekä suuhygienistiopiskelijoita Studentalissa että sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoita heidän asiantuntijuutensa kehittymisessä. Case tehtävien laadintaan tarvittavat tiedot muodostettiin teoreettisesta viitekehyksestä, jonka aineisto koottiin tiedonhakuna erilaisista tietokannoista. Tietolähteinä on käytetty lähinnä uusia julkaisuja ja case tehtävien laadinnassa on ollut mukana alan asiantuntija. Opinnäytetyön tekemisessä noudatettiin eettisiä ja luotettavia periaatteita. Opinnäytetyön tuotoksena syntynyt case tehtäviä sisältävä PowerPoint esitys saattohoitopotilaan suun terveyden ongelmista ja hoidosta jää Turun Ammattikorkeakoulun opiskelijoiden ja opettajien yhteiseen käyttöön. Jatkokehitysideana toimisi kyselyn tekeminen sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoille saattohoitopotilaan suun hoidosta. Lisäksi voisi etsiä vastauksia kysymyksiin, miten kyseistä PowerPoint esitystä päivitetään sekä miten sitä on hyödynnetty Studentalissa.Common problems appearing in palliative care patient’s mouths are varying infections on mouth and mucosa, such as mouths candidiasis- and herpes infection, drying of mouth and mucosa, soreness of mucosa, pain in mouth, cavitation of teeth, gingivitis and periodontitis. Ulcers on mucosa and problems in prosthesis are also common. These inflict pain in mouth and nurses should know how to relieve that. It would be recommendable that nurses would know to examine clinically the condition of patient’s mouth. Additionally oral care and oral hygiene are an essential part of palliative care patient’s basic care. The purpose of thesis was to create a PowerPoint presentation about case tasks of palliative care patient´s oral health problems and care. The aim was to create a PowerPoint presentation with case tasks that would contribute to nurse student’s oral health know-how of palliative care patient´s care. In this thesis oral health know-how means both identification of oral problems and acquaintance of oral care knowledge and skills. As a result of this practical thesis, PowerPoint presentation with case tasks was formed. Case tasks covers topics about palliative patient’s oral health problems and care. The presentation helps both dental hygienists in Studental unit and nurse students at their studies to develop their expertise. Required information of case tasks was formed of theoretical frame of reference and material was collected from different databases as an information retrieval. The sources of information were mainly new publications. There has also been an expert from the field involving in preparation of case tasks. The making of this thesis followed ethical and reliable principles. Created PowerPoint presentation of palliative patient’s oral health problems and care will be left at Turku University of Applied Sciences. There it can be used by students and teachers. Further development idea can be making a survey to nurse students of palliative care patient’s oral care. In addition one could seek the answers to the questions, how this PowerPoint presentation will be updated and how this has been utilized in Studental unit
